Claire is a 23 year old Eventer / Dressage rider; currently based at Bedgebury Equestrian Centre, near Tunbridge Wells.
As a junior rider, Claire was based with 5* International Eventer Francis Whittington for 4 years. During this time she was selected to represent the South East at the National Junior Eventing Championships where Metroville (Phoebus) and her were in 3rd place after Dressage. Unfortunately this ended in Claire taking out a very close up inspection of the ditch while Phoebus opted out of it! As a partnership, they then Evented up to Intermediate and CCI**S level, before turning to Dressage after a field injury.
Phoebus and Claire then danced their way up to Advanced Medium level with wins at every level, including during their very first Advanced Medium, and qualifications for youth championships and regionals at multiple levels.
Due to Phoebus’ retirement from Eventing, Claire has spent the last few years producing a young horse; Baleer aka Sandy. Sandy has now Evented up to Novice and CCI**S.
Unfortunately, also in 2017, Claire snapped her ankle and ruptured a spinal disk while riding a client’s horse which was life changing. Claire now suffers from intense chronic pain and has had 7 surgeries...and counting! Because of this, the competition side of things has slowed down a bit over the last couple of years, but Claire’s ankle is now as stable as it can get so a full return to competition is planned for the near future.
During the many months she spent recovering, Claire used her time wisely and invested it learning about Classical Dressage. She has now learnt how to do In Hand Classical Dressage, amongst other things. After spending so much time doing her own rehab, it sparked a passion for Claire.
While her own rehab was horrible, she is now passionate about improving the lives of horses are in a similar position.
Sasha is a 24 year old show jumper based in Marden, Kent.
After spending a few years on the eventing circuit and competing up to CCI3*L , Sasha made the move to show jumping full time. (Sasha adds that it's probably a good thing because her 3* horse got a 73.5 dressage in her test before going Double Clear!!)
Being part of 'Step up To Gold' 2018 with the BSJA, jumping up to 1.40 internationally, and gaining top 10 placings on her very special (and naughty!) mare called Quality Dreams (aka Ruby) were some of her biggest achievements having produced her from a very nappy and unhappy 4yr old! Ruby unfortunately died very unexpectedly at only 10 years old, but Sasha always says she owes her whole career to her.
Since then she has had the ride on Godies a 9yr old mare – Owned by Alex Clover – she also had a very difficult start in life and couldn’t be backed until she was nearly 6yrs old but is now jumping consistently 1.30/1.40 and Sasha hopes to aim her for the world ranking small Grand Prix at CSI2* for the future since Covid-19 put a spanner in the worlks for Olympia U25’s! Sasha also has the ride on another 4yr old mare owned by Alex.
Alongside Godies, Sasha also has 6yr old Indio W (owned by herself) who has a very promising future.
Sasha works as a freelance rider alongside campaigning these horses. She also takes horses in for schooling and sales livery. Visit www.sashaerander.co.uk for more information.
“I am very passionate in giving competition horse’s time and patience and getting the best out of them for their future career. All my horses go out in the field every day and do a variety of different work. I am very lucky to have regular lessons with Liz West – an Inter 1 dressage judge. She really is key to getting the horses to use themselves correctly, it is unbelievable how much it helps their jumping. It has made all my horses as they often come to me very bad on the flat, and I truly believe it is what sets them apart from the rest.”
Sasha has been very fortunate to have some amazing training opportunities with Shane Breen at Hickstead, and spending a few months in the USA with Bruce Davidson.
“Something you may not know about me – I have a 2:1 degree in digital media and I used to have an full time office role and balance show jumping so I could afford to do it however I decided to take the plunge and do horses full time very shortly after starting.
Being supported by Emily with Equusphoto is such an amazing experience – not only does she take amazing photos, she is the loveliest person ever and supports me in everything – she helped me design a website and logo – something I could never do on my own and was there for me when times were rough she still didn’t drop me or lose interest- thank you Emily!"
